How Stump Grinding Works
A stump grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel with carbide teeth. The operator sweeps the wheel back and forth across the stump, chewing the wood into small chips until the stump is below ground level. The resulting hole is filled with the chips or with soil, depending on what you plan to do next.
Preparing for Grinding
- Mark sprinkler heads, irrigation lines, and low-voltage lighting near the stump.
- Clear rocks, edging, and decorations from around the stump.
- Let us know about gate widths — compact grinders can fit through many standard side gates.
- Call 811 before any digging. Grinding stays fairly shallow, but buried utilities matter.
What Grinding Does and Doesn't Remove
Grinding removes the stump and the root flare near the surface. It doesn't pull out the full root system. The remaining roots below grade gradually decay. If you need the entire root ball out — for example, to build a patio or pour a foundation — that's stump removal, which is a different job.
What Happens to the Chips
Grinding a large stump creates a surprising volume of chips. You can keep them as mulch, have them used to fill the hole, or have them hauled away. If you plan to sod the area, removing chips and adding topsoil gives the grass a better start.
Surface Roots
Oaks and other large trees often have thick surface roots running across the lawn. Those can be ground out too, but it adds time. Point them out when requesting a quote.
| Stump grinding | Stump removal | |
|---|---|---|
| What's removed | Stump and surface roots, below grade | Stump and main root ball |
| Yard disruption | Minimal, localized | Significant excavation |
| Typical use | Lawn, sod, garden beds | Construction, hardscape, full replanting |
| Leftover material | Wood chips | A large hole that needs backfill |
What Affects the Cost of Stump Grinding
- Stump diameter
- Number of stumps
- Access for the grinder
- Hardwood vs. softwood
- Surface roots
- Chip removal or backfill

Residential Property Considerations
Every quote starts with the property: what's under the tree, how equipment can reach it, and what you want left behind. Before your estimate, it helps to note gate widths, sprinkler heads, septic areas, and any wires near the tree, and to have your five-digit ZIP code ready when you call.
